Iconic Version 1.1.0

The first minor version for Iconic is out and we think you’re going to like it. Like all our past updates, 1.1.0 is free for those purchased Iconic—so go get it! Speaking of things you’ll like, you can now try out Iconic for free. We’ve packaged up two of our more interesting icons for download, free of charge. So if you’re on the fence about buying Iconic, we suggest you check that out now. Now with that out of the way, let’s talk about all the cool stuff we’ve done.

Iconic 1.1.0 Highlights

Screenshot smart icons

Ever put a screenshot of an interface in a monitor, laptop, phone or some other screen-based device? We have too. To be honest, it’s usually a pain. We think Iconic has a pretty good solution for you. You can now add screenshots to our Browser, iPhone, Laptop, Monitor, Nexus and Tablet icons. The feature works on all browsers that support SVG.

How it works

In a word, simply. Just set the data-screenshot attribute to a URL of an image in the icon you want to show. So the following code...

<img class="iconic" data-src="iphone.svg" data-screenshot="screenshot.png" alt="iPhone">

...would result in this...

iPhone icon with screenshot

Awesome, right? This feature speaks to our belief that Iconic is far more than basic icons.

Our logic behind screenshot image sizes

For specific devices, such as iPhone, Nexus and Tablet (ahem, iPad) we wanted the icon to accurately represent the screen’s aspect ratio—even if the ratio was less than elegant. For instance, the large iPhone screen is 27:47. We did this to make device-specific screenshots fit neatly in the screen without much (or any) work. We aimed for elegant aspect ratios on generic devices (Browser, Laptop and Monitor) to make calculating image dimensions less painful. You can read all the details on how to make this work on each icons' detail page.

We make sure the images you set fit as well as possible. Images always take up the entire screen width and clip vertically (if taller than the screen).

5 new icons

Five new icons are now in Iconic, based on your suggestions. Say hello to the Elevator, External link Puzzle piece, Question mark and Target icons.

We’re prioritizing future design of icons based on your feedback. If you want to see an icon added to Iconic, let us know in our Community section. We read every post and add all suggestions to our list.

Minor enhancements to existing icons

This release has minor tweaks to the design of various icons—specifically all icons with the screenshot feature. The changes are very minor, but we think they make a big difference. We plan to continue improving the design of existing icons in future releases.

We’re just scratching the surface

SVG has so much potential and we have impressive things in the pipeline to share. This release is just a taste of what’s to come. We look forward to sharing more in the coming weeks and eagerly await to your feedback.
